Is there anything better than a good movie? A good book perhaps, I have to say that I don’t have much of any opportunity these days to read or at least I don’t make much of an opportunity to read. I guess this is a just another place I’m hoping that I can archive my pathetic DVD collection.
I actually really like watching horror films but I don’t really have a strong preference for the others genres. I’m a shocker to watch horror films because I laugh my way though the scary and gruesome bits. Perhaps I’m a little sadistic, but I really don’t think horror films are that scary. I remember when I was younger though my brother got a few of the ‘Chucky’ films. Being from an Asian family, censorship didn’t really exist and so at the tender age of six or seven I was exposed to the blood and glory, I actually got nightmares from it. I’ve since rented out some of the movies and watched them, to find that they are disturbingly some of the worst horror movies made.
On the topic of horror though below is a short list of ten horror films that I particularly enjoyed.
- Ringu 1988
- The Ring 2002
- The Bride of Frankenstein 1935
- Rosemary’s Baby 1968
- The Exorcist 1973
- The Blair Witch Project 1999
- Texas Chain Saw Massacre 1974
- Alien 1979
- Psycho 1960
- Silence of the Lambs 1991
For the best viewing experience I suggest a stormy night, being alone in the house and no lighting.
I used to watch A LOT of anime when I was younger, mostly because my sister and my brother had a lot of friends from HK and that’s all they ever watched. I don’t have the same appreciation for anime but I have my own little collection of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata films.
A personal favourite is ‘Grave of the Fireflies’ (1988) for those who haven’t seen the film, it’s a very touching animated film about a brother’s determination to look after his four year old sister during the World War II bombings in Japan. I won’t give away anymore, but feel free to borrow the DVD from me.
I’m a big fan of Michael J. Fox, I’m not sure why, but it could have something to do with my obsession with the Back to the Future Trilogy. I used to watch the series over and over and over again. My favourite scenes were when Marty McFly sings Johnny B. Good on stage, when Buford ‘Mad Dog’ Tannen (Biff Tannen’s great great grandfather) eats horse shit and of course the awesome futuristic car in all 3 and the funky-ass train right at the end of episode three.
I don’t think there’s too much else to say other than I’m always up for a good movie and a movie night.
